Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal
A first-time cruiser's guide to sailing from Port Canaveral on Florida's Space Coast — the cruise port serving the Orlando area.
The cruise port serving the Orlando area is Port Canaveral, located on Florida's Space Coast in Cape Canaveral, located roughly 45–50 miles east of Orlando International Airport. It is one of the busiest cruise ports in the United States and is especially convenient for travelers combining a cruise with Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, or a trip to the Kennedy Space Center.

Port Canaveral is a particularly good port if you're choosing among several cruise lines. The port currently identifies seven major cruise lines as homeporting there:
- Carnival Cruise Line
- Royal Caribbean International
- Disney Cruise Line
- MSC Cruises
- Norwegian Cruise Line
- Princess Cruises
- Celebrity Cruises
There are also other cruise-related operations at the port, including Victory Casino Cruises.
The itineraries are primarily to the Bahamas and Caribbean, with some longer cruises going farther afield.
Getting There from Orlando
From Orlando International Airport (MCO), the easiest route is generally:
SR-528 / Beachline Expressway east → Port Canaveral
It's a straightforward drive and is approximately 45 miles from the airport.
For the cruise terminals, you'll generally encounter:
- Exit 54A — north/A-terminal side, including Terminals 5, 6, 8 and 10.
- Exit 54B — south/B-terminal side, including Terminals 1, 2 and 3.
Port Canaveral Parking
This is one of Port Canaveral's advantages: you can park directly at the cruise terminal instead of taking a shuttle from an off-site lot.
The official port website says its cruise parking consists of parking garages and surface lots adjacent to the terminals, so passengers generally park and walk to the terminal. The facilities are described as secure and patrolled 24 hours a day.
Parking Style
Port Canaveral uses a mixture of:
- Covered parking garages
- Surface parking lots
- Oversized-vehicle parking
- Accessible/disabled parking
The garages and lots are immediately adjacent to the cruise terminals, making this essentially a park-and-walk arrangement rather than a park-and-shuttle arrangement. Parking rates vary by style.
RV / Oversized Vehicles
Oversized parking is available.
Payment
Port Canaveral is cashless. Major credit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, are accepted.
Parking Reservations
The port says parking reservations are not required and that there is ample parking at the terminals.
Accessible Parking
Accessible spaces are available, and the port provides parking-fee waivers for qualifying vehicles transporting certain people with disabilities under the port's specified requirements.
Off-Site Parking Alternatives
If you're trying to save money, there are private cruise-parking facilities outside the port that provide shuttle service.
For example:
- Park N Cruise | Port Canaveral Cruise Parking — Merritt Island; off-site cruise parking with shuttle service.
- Port Canaveral Parking | Cruise Parking + Free Shuttle — Merritt Island; covered and uncovered options with shuttle service.
- Port Parking Space at Port Canaveral — close to the port and offers parking plus shuttle transportation.
- Park Port Canaveral Cruise Parking — off-site surface parking with shuttle service.
Off-site lots can be considerably cheaper, but you're trading some convenience for a parking shuttle, check-in process and potentially waiting for transportation after the cruise. Current prices vary by operator, sailing length and availability, so I would compare the total price for your exact cruise rather than just the advertised daily rate.
Hotels Near Port Canaveral
If you're flying into Orlando before your cruise, I strongly recommend staying near Port Canaveral the night before the cruise rather than trying to fly into Orlando and drive to the port on the morning of embarkation.
This is particularly worthwhile if your cruise departs early, you're traveling with children, or your flight arrives the previous afternoon/evening.
Some convenient choices include:
- Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Port Canaveral, FL
9009 Astronaut Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
A popular cruise-oriented hotel close to the port. It's a practical choice if your priority is simply being near the terminal the night before. - Homewood Suites by Hilton Cape Canaveral-Cocoa Beach
9000 Astronaut Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
A good option for families or longer stays because of the suite-style accommodations. It's particularly useful if you want more room than a conventional hotel room. - Hampton Inn & Suites Cape Canaveral Cruise Port
9004 Astronaut Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
Convenient for cruisers and close to the port, with the familiar Hampton Inn format. - Hyatt Place Cape Canaveral
9119 Astronaut Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
A newer-feeling option that's convenient to the port and Cocoa Beach area. - Holiday Inn Express Cape Canaveral by IHG
995 Shorewood Dr., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
Another convenient pre-cruise option, particularly if you want to stay close to the terminals. - TownePlace Suites by Marriott Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach
605 W Central Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
A good choice if you prefer suite-style accommodations and want access to restaurants and Cocoa Beach. - SpringHill Suites by Marriott Cape Canaveral Cocoa Beach
655 W Central Blvd., Cape Canaveral, FL 32920
Another suite-oriented Marriott option that's geared well toward pre- and post-cruise stays.
Should You Stay in Orlando or Cape Canaveral?
For a cruise, I would generally rank the options:
- Best for cruise convenience: Cape Canaveral
- Best for Disney/Universal vacation: Orlando
- Best for combining beach + cruise: Cocoa Beach/Cape Canaveral
- Best if flying in the night before: Cape Canaveral
If you're spending several days at Disney or Universal before your cruise, staying in Orlando can make sense. But I'd move to Cape Canaveral the day before sailing.
That eliminates the possibility of an Orlando traffic problem, rental-car delay, accident on SR-528, or flight-related complication putting your cruise at risk.
Transportation from Orlando Airport
You have several options:
Rental Car
This is probably the most flexible option if you're spending time in Orlando first.
You can drive directly from MCO to Port Canaveral and then either:
- Return the rental car near the port, or
- Keep the car and park at the cruise terminal.
Rideshare
Uber/Lyft are commonly used between Orlando and Cape Canaveral. This can be convenient for couples or small groups, but pricing varies substantially depending on demand.
Cruise-Line Transfers
Some cruise lines offer transportation from Orlando International Airport or selected Orlando hotels to Port Canaveral. Check your specific cruise line because availability and pricing vary.
Private Shuttle
Private cruise transfers can make sense for larger families/groups, particularly if you're splitting the cost among several people.
What Is at Port Canaveral?
Port Canaveral isn't simply a parking lot and a cruise terminal. The area has quite a bit to do before or after your cruise.
Nearby attractions include:
- Cocoa Beach
- Jetty Park
- Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex
- Restaurants and waterfront dining
- Shopping
- Fishing and boating
- Manatee Sanctuary Park
- Exploration Tower
- Beach activities
The port itself also has recreational and entertainment facilities.
Kennedy Space Center
If you've never visited Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, adding a day before or after your cruise can be an excellent use of your time.
It's one of the major reasons I prefer the Cape Canaveral area over simply staying at an airport hotel.
A Few Very Important Things to Know
- Don't confuse Orlando with Port Canaveral. Your cruise does not depart from Orlando. It departs from Port Canaveral in Cape Canaveral, approximately 45–50 miles away.
- Your terminal number matters. Don't simply type "Port Canaveral" into your GPS and assume you'll be fine. Find the terminal number in your cruise documents and enter the specific terminal address.
- Don't use the port authority address for embarkation. The 445 Challenger Road address is the Canaveral Port Authority administrative address. Your cruise terminal has a different address.
- Parking is very convenient. If you're driving, Port Canaveral is unusually easy because the official garages/lots are directly adjacent to the terminals. You generally don't have to park miles away and take a shuttle.
- Budget for the departure day. The port charges for both the day you arrive and the day you leave, so a seven-night cruise generally produces an eight-day parking charge.
- Arrive according to your cruise line's instructions. Don't assume that getting to the terminal at 7 a.m. means you'll immediately be able to park and check in. Port parking facilities don't open before 10 a.m. for embarking passengers, and your cruise line will give you an assigned arrival/check-in window.
- Check your terminal shortly before sailing. Terminal assignments can change. The port specifically advises passengers to confirm their embarkation location with their cruise line or travel agent.
