One of the most important things to understand about Cape Liberty is that it is in New Jersey, not New York. If you put a generic "New York cruise terminal" into your GPS, you could easily end up at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal or Brooklyn Cruise Terminal instead, which are completely different facilities.
What is the terminal like?
Cape Liberty is a purpose-built cruise terminal on a former military ocean terminal. The site was redeveloped into a cruise port in 2004 and is operated primarily for Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises.
The terminal is smaller and easier to navigate than the larger, busier cruise ports like Port Miami or Port Everglades. Many first-time cruisers find Cape Liberty refreshingly straightforward: there is one main terminal building, a single primary parking area, and a relatively short walk from car to ship.
The big advantage of Cape Liberty is its location on the Upper New York Bay. Sailing out of Cape Liberty is one of the more scenic cruise departures in the United States. Depending on your itinerary, you may get views of:
- Statue of Liberty
- Manhattan skyline
- Brooklyn and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge
- New York Harbor
- New Jersey waterfront
Cruise lines that use Cape Liberty
Cape Liberty is the New York-area homeport for two sister cruise lines:
- Royal Caribbean International
- Celebrity Cruises
Both lines are owned by the Royal Caribbean Group, and Cape Liberty was developed specifically to serve them. Royal Caribbean operates some of the world's largest cruise ships, and several of its Voyager, Oasis and Quantum class ships have sailed from Cape Liberty over the years.
Other cruise lines may occasionally use the terminal, but Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are the primary operators. Always check your cruise documents to confirm your exact departure terminal.
Parking at Cape Liberty
Parking at Cape Liberty is one of the easier aspects of sailing from this port, but it helps to understand how it works before you arrive.
On-site terminal parking
Cape Liberty has a surface parking lot located close to the terminal building. The walk from the parking area to the ship is generally short, which makes Cape Liberty convenient for families, elderly passengers, and anyone traveling with a lot of luggage.
Parking style
This is open-air surface parking rather than an enclosed garage.
Advantages:
- You don't have to take a taxi or shuttle from an off-site lot.
- Your vehicle is close to the terminal for the duration of the cruise.
- Short walk between your car and the ship.
- Very convenient if you're traveling with children, elderly passengers or lots of luggage.
Disadvantages:
- Your vehicle is exposed to the weather for the duration of the cruise.
- Parking capacity can be limited on busy sailing days when two ships are in port.
- You're driving into the New York/New Jersey metro area.
Payment
On-site parking is generally credit-card only. Confirm accepted payment methods before you travel, and don't count on paying cash at the lot.
Off-site parking alternatives
Because Cape Liberty's on-site parking is reasonably priced compared to ports like Manhattan, most cruisers simply park at the terminal. If you want to save money on a longer cruise, there are private parking lots and garages in the Bayonne and Jersey City area, but you'll need to arrange your own transportation to and from the terminal.
Some travelers park at off-site lots near Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and take a taxi or rideshare to the terminal. This can be cheaper for very long cruises, but it adds a transfer step that isn't necessary if you use the on-site lot.
My parking recommendation
For most first-time cruisers sailing from Cape Liberty, I'd simply use the on-site terminal parking. The rate is reasonable, the walk is short, and you avoid the hassle of arranging a separate transfer.
If you're taking a longer cruise and trying to save money, investigate an off-site lot with a guaranteed cruise-parking rate and confirmed transportation to the terminal.
Hotels near Cape Liberty
There are several hotels within a short drive of the terminal, including options in Bayonne, Jersey City, and near Newark Liberty International Airport.
Very close options
Hampton Inn & Suites Jersey City
Jersey City, NJ
This is a popular pre-cruise hotel choice because it's close to Cape Liberty and offers easy access to Manhattan via the PATH train or ferry if you want to sightsee before your cruise.
Hotel Guides
Hyatt House Jersey City
A modern, all-suite hotel with views of the Manhattan skyline. It's convenient to the cruise terminal and a good option if you'd like to combine your pre-cruise stay with a visit to New York City.
Hotels near Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
There are many chain hotels near Newark Airport, roughly 10–15 minutes from Cape Liberty by car. These are often less expensive than hotels in Manhattan or Jersey City, and they're a practical choice if you're flying in the night before your cruise.
Manhattan hotels
If sightseeing is part of your trip, you can stay in Manhattan and take a taxi or rideshare to Cape Liberty. The drive is typically 30–45 minutes depending on traffic and the time of day.
Why I recommend staying the night before
If you're flying or driving a substantial distance to New Jersey, I strongly recommend arriving the day before your cruise rather than trying to reach the ship the morning it departs.
New York/New Jersey traffic can be unpredictable, and you don't want a delayed flight, traffic accident, tunnel backup or weather problem to jeopardize your cruise.
Staying near the terminal gives you:
- Much less stress on embarkation morning
- More time to explore New York City or New Jersey
- A short taxi/rideshare ride to the terminal
- A backup if transportation gets delayed
- More flexibility with your cruise's assigned check-in time
Transportation to the terminal
Taxi / Uber / Lyft
For most travelers, this is probably the easiest option.
Tell the driver: "Cape Liberty Cruise Port, 14 Port Terminal Boulevard, Bayonne, New Jersey."
Don't simply say "New York cruise terminal," because there are multiple cruise facilities in the New York area and you could be taken to the wrong one.
Public transportation
Cape Liberty is not directly served by a train or subway station. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail's 34th Street station in Bayonne is the closest rail stop, but you'll still need a taxi or rideshare for the final leg to the terminal. If you're carrying substantial luggage, I'd generally recommend a taxi/rideshare from your hotel.
From the airports
You have three major airport choices:
- Newark Liberty International (EWR) — the closest airport to Cape Liberty, about 10–15 minutes away by car.
- LaGuardia (LGA) — farther away, in Queens, New York.
- JFK — the farthest of the three, but served by extensive public transportation.
Your choice should depend heavily on airfare and traffic rather than simply choosing the geographically closest airport. Newark is usually the most convenient for Cape Liberty departures.
Terminal amenities
Cape Liberty's terminal is functional rather than luxurious.
You can expect:
- Restrooms
- Passenger check-in areas
- Security screening
- Customs/immigration facilities for arriving passengers
- Some seating
- Limited food/snack options
- Wi-Fi
Don't expect a major airport-style shopping or dining experience. The terminal is designed to move passengers onto the ship efficiently.
One important detail: there is no luggage-storage facility at the terminal. If you arrive early or want to spend several hours sightseeing after your cruise, you'll need to make separate luggage-storage arrangements.
Things to do nearby
Cape Liberty's location is excellent for combining a cruise with sightseeing.
Within the surrounding area you have:
- Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (via ferry from Liberty State Park)
- Liberty State Park
- Liberty Science Center
- Manhattan (Times Square, Broadway, Central Park)
- Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge
- Newark and the Prudential Center
- Jersey City waterfront and restaurants
Liberty State Park is particularly close and offers some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island. It's worth considering if you arrive a day early.
Important tips for cruise passengers
- Confirm your terminal before leaving your hotel. Don't assume every New York-area cruise departs from the same place. Cape Liberty, Manhattan, and Brooklyn are three separate facilities.
- Don't confuse Cape Liberty with Manhattan or Brooklyn. This is probably the single biggest mistake to avoid. Cape Liberty is in Bayonne, New Jersey; the Manhattan terminal is on Manhattan's West Side; and the Brooklyn terminal is in Red Hook.
- Arrive the day before if you're flying. I wouldn't recommend flying into the New York area on the morning your cruise departs unless you have a very substantial buffer.
- Don't underestimate New York/New Jersey traffic. The terminal is easy to locate, but getting through the metro area can take considerably longer than the distance on the map suggests.
- Reserve parking if possible. On busy sailing days when two ships are in port, the on-site lot can fill up. Don't assume you'll automatically find a space.
- Don't leave your luggage unattended. Because the terminal does not provide luggage storage, arrange a hotel or independent luggage-storage service if you have time to kill before or after your cruise.
- Keep your cruise documents accessible. Have your cruise-line app, boarding documents, passports/identification and luggage tags readily available when you arrive.
- Use Newark Liberty (EWR) when possible. It's the closest airport to Cape Liberty and usually the most convenient choice.
Overall assessment
- Location: Excellent. On the Upper New York Bay with spectacular sail-away views.
- Convenience: Very good. A smaller, easy-to-navigate terminal with short walks.
- Parking: Convenient and reasonably priced at approximately $20–$25/night.
- Terminal facilities: Functional rather than luxurious.
- Sightseeing potential: Outstanding. You can easily turn a cruise departure into a New York City vacation.
Best feature: The scenic departure past the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline.
Biggest drawback: New York/New Jersey traffic can be unpredictable on embarkation day.
Best strategy for most cruisers: Stay in Bayonne, Jersey City, or near Newark Airport the night before, use a taxi/rideshare to the terminal, and park on-site if you're driving.
